ScholarCHIPS, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to provide college scholarships, mentoring, mental health supports, and a peer support network to young adults whose parents have been incarcerated. The organization aims to support these students in completing their higher education and reducing the stigma they face due to familial incarceration.

History

ScholarCHIPS was founded in 2010 by Yasmine Arrington, who personally experienced the challenges of having an incarcerated parent. Her journey began when she was a junior in high school, participating in the LearnServe International Program, which inspired her to address community needs. Recognizing the lack of scholarships for students with incarcerated parents, Yasmine created ScholarCHIPS as her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

  • Scholarship Program: ScholarCHIPS offers renewable scholarships, as well as book awards, to eligible students who maintain good academic standing.
  • Mentorship & College Completion Program: Provides one-on-one mentoring and professional development workshops to support students through college.

As of recent data, ScholarCHIPS has supported 88 scholars, with 40 graduates successfully completing their college education. The organization is recognized for its successful program, where at least 95% of its scholars persist in school and graduate, overcoming significant barriers.
