BULGARIAN CULTURAL AND HERITAGE CENTER OF SEATTLE
Welcome to the Official Page of The Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle - BCHCS
The Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle (BCHCS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and supporting Bulgarian culture and heritage in the greater Seattle area. Founded in 2011 and granted federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 2012, BCHCS serves both the local Bulgarian community and the wider Seattle population through cultural education, events, and community outreach[1][3].
History
While the Bulgarian community in the Pacific Northwest had existed for some time, with an estimated 3,000 people in the Seattle area as of 2012, the impetus to establish a formal cultural organization arose during the 2011 NW Folklife Festival. There, a Bulgarian Cultural Focus presented the country's culture and history to great interest and enthusiasm from the public and local Bulgarians alike. This inspired key organizers Elka Rouskov, Teodora Minkova, and Evgenia Angelova to found BCHCS in June 2011. The organization subsequently formalized its structure with a Board of Directors, bylaws, and a mission statement. BCHCS was officially registered with the Washington Secretary of State in July 2011 and secured federal nonprofit status in 2012[3].
Mission
The mission of the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle is to establish, organize, support, and promote events that celebrate both traditional and contemporary Bulgarian culture. The Center is committed to preserving Bulgarian heritage, educating audiences of all ages, engaging the Bulgarian community and the broader Seattle public, and fostering collaborative relationships with other cultural organizations to enhance the visibility and understanding of Bulgarian culture[1][2].
Activities
BCHCS organizes a variety of cultural events and programs that showcase Bulgarian traditions, arts, and history. These activities serve to strengthen community bonds among Seattle-area Bulgarians and introduce the broader population to Bulgaria’s rich cultural legacy. The Center’s involvement at festivals, educational outreach, and cultural celebrations exemplify its role as a cultural hub within the region[1][5].
Organization
The Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle operates under the leadership of a Board of Directors. As of the latest available information, Elka Rouskov serves as the organization’s president. BCHCS is also known by the trade names BCHCS, Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center, and BCHC[1][3].
Community Impact
The Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle is highly regarded by its community, with a significant majority of local reviewers praising it as an essential institution for cultural preservation and community connection. The organization is recognized for effectively promoting Bulgarian heritage and providing a welcoming space for cultural engagement in the Seattle metropolitan area[5].
This nonprofit organization plays a vital role in maintaining the cultural identity of Bulgarians in the Pacific Northwest and enriching Seattle's multicultural landscape.
