Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives
Overview
The Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) is a nonprofit organization registered under the 501(c)(6) designation, aiming to support and enhance the operations of member-owned electric cooperatives across Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.
History and Membership
VMDAEC was established to serve the electric cooperatives in the three-state region. It marked its 75th anniversary in 2019. The association includes thirteen member cooperatives in Virginia, two in Maryland, and one in Delaware, collectively serving over 2 million people through more than 700,000 meters in Virginia, 200,000 meters in Maryland, and 110,000 meters in Delaware[1][3].
Mission and Activities
VMDAEC functions as a trade association, providing essential services that benefit its member cooperatives. Its primary mission revolves around supporting these cooperatives by offering training, legislative advocacy, and communication services. This role fosters collaboration and information sharing among members, ensuring they remain competitive and effective in their operations[2][3].
Organizational Structure
Each of the association's member systems is represented by two directors on its board, which is responsible for establishing policy and providing strategic direction. The board holds quarterly meetings to oversee the association's activities. VMDAEC also employs a president and chief executive officer to manage its operations, supported by approximately 24 full-time positions[1].
Impact and Advocacy
Through its initiatives, VMDAEC plays a crucial role in advocating for member cooperatives at the state and federal levels. This advocacy helps ensure that the interests of electric cooperatives are represented in policy discussions, contributing to a favorable regulatory environment for these organizations. Additionally, VMDAEC supports community improvement by providing resources that enable its members to address local energy challenges effectively[2].
Financial Overview
As a nonprofit, VMDAEC submits Form 990 to maintain transparency in its financial operations. The association's financial reports detail its executive compensation, salaries, and operational costs, reflecting its commitment to accountability[2].
