Students at the GLCAC’s Methuen Head Start Center are studying insects and learning firsthand about the lifecycle of a butterfly. The children have been fascinated by the process, observing five chrysalises from caterpillar to butterfly. The next step will be releasing the butterflies into nature! The students also worked together as a team to create a lifecycle poster made from small, crumpled pieces of paper – an activity that required concentration, patience and planning among these young learners. These hands-on activities are examples of how the GLCAC’s Head Start centers are preparing students for success in kindergarten and beyond. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, Head Start is a federal program that provides comprehensive early childhood education, health and social services to low-income families with children ages birth to 5 years.
