Pastoral Bible Institute Inc.
The Pastoral Bible Institute Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization with a rich history linked to the Bible Student movement. Its establishment is tied to a significant split within the Watch Tower Society, a major organization associated with Jehovah's Witnesses, following the leadership change after Charles Taze Russell's death in 1916.
Background
The movement began with a group of Bible Students meeting in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, during the late 19th century. These early gatherings were influenced by Millerite Adventist ideas and the teachings of Charles Taze Russell. However, with the rise of Joseph Rutherford as president of the Watch Tower Society, certain members and leaders disagreed with his direction, leading to a separation.
Formation
In 1918, a convention held in Asbury Park, New Jersey, marked the first major gathering of these dissenting Bible Students. Subsequent meetings in Providence, Rhode Island, led to the formal creation of the Pastoral Bible Institute (PBI). Its primary goal was to continue Pastor Russell's pastoral work outside the confines of the Watch Tower Society.
Activities and Publications
The Pastoral Bible Institute focuses on spiritual guidance and the dissemination of Christian literature. A key publication is The Herald of Christ's Kingdom, a bi-monthly magazine that has been in circulation since 1918. The organization also distributes various religious materials such as booklets and leaflets. Their activities aim to provide spiritual support and foster fellowship among believers.
Structure and Beliefs
The Associated Bible Students, with whom the PBI is closely linked, operate on a congregational model. Local groups are independent and self-governing, maintaining fellowship with other similar congregations. The organization does not impose creedal requirements for fellowship, emphasizing adherence to Scriptural teachings instead.
Current Status
Today, the Pastoral Bible Institute functions in a reduced capacity compared to its early years. However, it continues to publish The Herald of Christ's Kingdom and distribute religious materials to thousands of recipients. The organization is headquartered in the state of Washington and operates under U.S. nonprofit status.
Mission
The primary mission of the Pastoral Bible Institute is to spiritually support and guide believers, promote biblical truths, and spread the Good News. By preserving the principles of early Christian teachings, they aim to provide comfort and guidance amidst religious confusion and secular challenges.
