VBEA & EAN together in Richmond for the 2025 VEA Summit on Educators of Color: Intent vs Impact **What we do speaks louder than what we say** #veaeoc25 (fb)

Tuesday’s Takeaways: School Board 5/27 Part 2: the 4/8 resolution related items 1) Strategic Framework: Compass to 2025 - Motioned by Mike Callan and Seconded by Carolyn Weems. Rose Dwyer asked Dr. Robertson if changes to the Strategic Frameworks were just going to be cosmetic. When asked for clarification of her question she stated she wanted to ensure action would be taken and this wasn’t just for show. David Culpepper made a motion to eliminate Compass to 2025 and change the start date of Compass to 2030 to begin 5/28/25. Dr. Robertson expressed his discomfort with this citing staff who have invested 5 years in Compass to 2025 would have no closure. Culpepper rescinded his motion. The changes to Compass to 2025 passed on a 6-5 vote (opposed: Matt Cummings, Sharon Felton, Dr. Alveta Green, Kim Melnyk and Melinda Rogers) 2) Strategic Framework: Compass to 2030 - Motioned by Rose Dwyer and Seconded by David Culpepper. This document removes the words diversity, diverse, equity (including the definition of equity) and culturally responsive teaching from the Strategic Framework. This passed on a 6-5 vote (opposed: Matt Cummings, Sharon Felton, Dr. Alveta Green, Kim Melnyk and Melinda Rogers) 3) Policy 5-4/ Educational Equity - Motioned by David Culpepper and Seconded by Rose Dwyer. Melinda Rogers motioned to send it back to PRC citing SB Bylaw 1-32’s requirement for signatures by the staff member who reviewed it and the individual who drafted the changes were missing. SB Attorney Kamala Lannetti stated the Resolution overrides the Bylaw and the Policy didn’t need to follow the Bylaw’s requirement for signatures before being brought forward to the SB. It is her legal advice that the process Policy 5-4 followed to get to the SB for information and vote did not need to follow the Bylaw because of the resolution. The motion failed on a 5-6 vote (opposed: Mark Bohenstiel, Kathleen Brown, Mike Callan, David Culpepper, Rose Dwyer and Carolyn Weems) Kathleen Brown made a motion to add a single line to section A “The School Board values the diversity in our students, families, staff and volunteers”. Melinda Rogers called this a poor attempt to placate community members and that the statement doesn’t do anything to fix the issue. The motion failed on a 5-6 vote (opposed: Mark Bohenstiel, Matt Cummings, Sharon Felton, Dr. Alveta Green, Kim Melnyk and Melinda Rogers) The original motion returned for a vote (gutting Policy 5-4). Matt Cummings commented on how he had submitted feedback on the changes with suggested revisions and never received a response, not even an acknowledgment of receiving the revisions. The changes passed on a 6-5 vote (opposed: Matt Cummings, Sharon Felton, Dr. Alveta Green, Kim Melnyk and Melinda Rogers). (fb)
