Melissa Yee, MD, is a medical oncologist and hematologist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Mercy and recently told us about what she most enjoys about her work, and what it means to be an oncologist. “As an oncologist, I enjoy helping patients find hope after a cancer diagnosis. Cancer is a humbling disease and often can bring what is truly important to the forefront. It is rewarding for me to provide treatment to patients so that they can achieve their goals and enjoy what is most precious to them. My role is to partner with patients to empower each individual to understand their disease and make decisions that are best for them. Like most people, I have had loved ones diagnosed with cancer and I can appreciate how difficult and scary it is. I aim to help patients come to terms with their diagnosis, come up with a treatment plan, and find a way to move forward together. It is an honor that my patients entrust me with their care, and I am grateful to be a part of their lives. I would not be able to provide the care that I do without a team of exceptional individuals behind me. I am lucky to work with so many dedicated and caring people every single day.” (fb)
