Indiana Non-Public Education Association (INPEA)
The Indiana Non-Public Education Association (INPEA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the quality and viability of Indiana's non-public schools. Established in 1974, INPEA represents over 400 schools across 77 counties in Indiana, serving more than 96,000 students annually. These schools include both faith-based and independent institutions, offering diverse educational opportunities to families in Indiana.
Mission and Activities
INPEA's primary mission is to advocate for the interests of non-public schools at various state-level educational bodies, including the Indiana General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Education, and the Indiana State Board of Education. The organization plays a significant role in promoting school choice initiatives in Indiana, having been involved in the establishment and implementation of programs such as the Scholarship Tax Credit and the Choice Scholarship (Voucher) Programs.
INPEA also engages in professional development by hosting conferences and workshops. Notably, it organizes two major conferences: the Indiana Non-Public Educators' Conference (INPEC), which takes place every two years, and the Indiana Non-Public Administrators' Conference (INPAC), held on alternating years. These events provide engaging educational sessions and networking opportunities for educators and administrators from preschool through high school.
Events and Anniversaries
INPEA marked its 50th anniversary in 2024 with a series of celebrations and events. Additionally, the association continues to support teacher recognition programs, encouraging nominations for awards like the Educational Excellence Awards to honor outstanding educators in Indiana.
Leadership
As of recent updates, James McNeany has been selected to succeed John Elcesser as INPEA's executive director. John Elcesser had served in this role since January 2008 and is set to retire. The change highlights INPEA's ongoing commitment to leadership and advocacy in the non-public education sector in Indiana.
Advocacy and Public Role
INPEA remains a central figure in the school choice movement, actively promoting parental choice and advocating for policies that benefit non-public schools. Through its work, INPEA ensures that these schools can maintain their unique missions and provide diverse educational options for families across Indiana.
