Description

American Veterans (AMVETS)

American Veterans, commonly known as AMVETS, is a non-partisan, volunteer-led organization. It was originally formed as the American Veterans of World War II in 1944 by veterans of World War II. Over time, its membership expanded to include veterans from the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and all subsequent U.S. military involvements.

History

AMVETS was conceived in 1943 when two independent veteran clubs, one located on the campus of George Washington University and another comprised of veterans working in the government, collaborated to host a servicemen's party in Washington, D.C. By 1944, similar clubs had formed in several states, including California, Florida, Louisiana, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas. In December 1944, eighteen leaders from nine of these clubs met in Kansas City, Missouri, to formally establish the organization. The name "American Veterans of World War II" was adopted, and the term "AMVETS" was coined by newspaper headline writers.

In October 1945, the first national convention was held in Chicago, marking a significant milestone in the organization's growth. AMVETS petitioned Congress for a federal charter, which was granted on July 23, 1947, by President Harry S. Truman, making AMVETS the first World War II veterans organization to receive a congressional charter.

Expansion and Membership

Initially, membership was limited to World War II veterans. However, in response to subsequent conflicts, AMVETS requested and received amendments to its charter to extend membership eligibility. In 1966, veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War were allowed to join, following an amendment signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a public law further expanding membership to include all honorably discharged veterans from World War II to the present.

Activities and Advocacy

AMVETS focuses on advocating for veterans' rights, promoting national issues that benefit the United States, supporting youth programs, and maintaining friendships among veterans. It also recognizes excellence through its annual Silver Helmet Awards in areas such as Americanism, defense, rehabilitation, and congressional service.

Structure and Recognition

AMVETS operates as a federally chartered corporation and maintains a significant presence nationwide. The organization holds an annual national convention, where representatives from various levels gather to address issues impacting veterans and the organization. AMVETS publishes The American Veteran and offers various programs to support veterans and their families.

Today, AMVETS is one of the prominent veterans' organizations in the United States, with a commitment to serving veterans and fostering community involvement. Its legacy reflects the evolving needs of veterans across generations.
