💡Resident spotlight💡Azteca & Emily! Azteca & Emily are one of our small but mighty flocks here at FOTF! Both have overcome quite a lot in their lives. Azteca was dumped at FOTF along with roosters Mario & Gallardo. Sadly, their owner could no longer care for them. Emily was rescued from a cock fighting ring in TN, along with hens Ember & Leena. While roosters are the poor souls forced to fight, hens are used for their eggs, meat, and to breed more roosters destined for cruel fighting and death. At first, Azteca was housed with Gallardo, but sadly the boys no longer cohabitated peacefully after Gallardo went through some medical issues. Emily has tried several flocks here and none of them seemed to be a good fit, until our caretakers introduced her to Azteca! These two sweet souls now live peacefully with a lush yard to roam, a cozy coop to sleep in, and yummy snacks daily. Most would agree that cock fighting is cruel and wrong. But the buying and selling of chickens, even for backyard flocks, also has a dark side. Countless chickens are purchased without foresight into the care they may need, particularly around Easter, and many die or are abandoned. Even worse, since it is legal to ship chicks through the mail, many are killed in transport. Just recently, 4,000 chicks died after being left at a USPS facility in Pennsylvania without water, food, or temperature control. Chickens are incredible creatures that deserve so much more than society gives them! We are so proud that Azteca & Emily can call FOTF their home. What do you love about chickens?
