75 years ago this weekend, the 1950 season had its opening day. There were four games that took place on this chilly evening of May 18, 1950. The attendance was down due to the weather as a total of 7,626 fan showed up for the beginning of the new season. The Peoria Redwings lost their home opener in front of 2,400 fans to the Kenosha Comets, 6-0. Pitcher, Nancy Warren took the loss and Comets pitcher, Beth Goldsmith threw a two hitter! Goldsmith also helped her own cause by getting three hits of her own. Comet hitters: Marge Villa, Jo Leonard, Jean Buckley and Julie Gutz all contributed to the Comet offense. In Racine, 1,633 fans saw the Belles knock off the Rockford Peaches, 6 to 3. Ellie Dapkus got the win and Nikki Fox took the loss. Sophie Kurys led the Belles with two hits and Eddie Perlick, Betty Trezza, June Peppas and Ruby Heafner all had base hits. Amy Applegren had two hits for the Peaches. 1,537 fans saw the home team, Muskegon Lassies take a 2-0 nothing win over the Fort Wayne Daisies. Sammy Sams pitched a strong outing and Jean Lovell’s pinch hit provided the runs for the win. Maxine Kline took the loss for the Daisies. During the 1950 season, the Muskegon lasses moved to Kalamazoo and played there till 1954. In South Bend, 2,056 fans brave the cold to see the Grand Rapids Chicks take care of business 13 to 5 over the Blue Sox. “Beans” Risinger got the win for the Chicks and Jean Faut was handed the loss. A few more pictures from our wonderful evening at Parkview Field, home of the Ft. Wayne TinCaps. Thanks for honoring the Daisies - we loved the special uniforms worn by the TinCaps and the events focused on the AAGPBL! On hand tonight was AAGPBL player, Mary Moore, and our dear friend, Megan Cavanaugh, Marla Hooch, from A League of Their Own. (fb)
