Spokane Area Youth Choirs
The Spokane Area Youth Choirs (SAY) is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide a joyful and challenging musical experience to young singers in the Spokane area. Founded in 1987, SAY has dedicated itself to enriching the lives of choristers through the study, rehearsal, and performance of choral music.
Mission and Programs
SAY's mission is centered around fostering healthy vocal technique, teaching musical theory and music history, and introducing students to a variety of literature and performance styles. The organization caters to children ranging from ages 5 to 18, offering graduated levels of choral participation. For younger children aged 5 and 6, SAY offers the ABC program, which focuses on the Kodaly method to introduce young minds to the world of music. Older students are placed in appropriate choirs based on their age and musical ability, ensuring a tailored learning environment.
Outreach and Community Engagement
One notable outreach program of SAY is Le Donne, a non-auditioned choir for adult women that was established as an extension of the organization's mission. Directed by Barbara Tappa, Le Donne provides a meaningful outlet for vocal expression and community engagement by offering a diverse repertoire in up to four parts, thus enriching both singers and audiences alike.
Fundraising and Events
SAY frequently organizes events and fundraisers to support their programs, such as the Stardust Gala Celebration, which has successfully raised substantial funds to further the choir's goals and ambitions. These events not only contribute to the financial sustainability of the organization but also bring the community together to celebrate choral music.
Legacy and Impact
Since its inception, Spokane Area Youth Choirs has positively influenced the lives of over a thousand choristers and numerous audience members. The organization continues to serve as a vibrant part of the local arts scene, providing opportunities for musical growth and fostering a love of music among young people. Through its commitment to quality music education and community outreach, SAY remains a valued resource for choral music enthusiasts in the region.
