A recent UCLA study found that 50% of California's college students have experienced food insecurity, yet more than half believed they were ineligible for CalFresh. The truth is that, three years ago, California became one of the first states in the country to offer college students access to federal SNAP benefits, known here as CalFresh. It's CalFresh Awareness Month, so let us debunk some myths for you... Myth: You will not qualify for CalFresh benefits if you're a college student. Fact: Many students qualify for CalFresh as eligibility is based on factors like income, household size, age, credits enrolled in, work-study, receiving Cal Grant A or B, working at least 20 hours a week, having no Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and receiving CalWorks. Myth: CalFresh benefits negatively impact financial aid. Fact: CalFresh isn't considered income, so it doesn't have any impact on financial aid. Myth: You have to repay the money you receive from CalFresh. Fact: CalFresh isn't debt you need to pay back. All the money you receive from CalFresh benefits come with no strings attached. Seniors often struggle with food insecurity due to a combination of factors, including limited income, health conditions, transportation challenges and social isolation.
