Description

Poetry Northwest

Poetry Northwest is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting contemporary poetry and fostering a community of readers and writers. Incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in March 2007, it operates as an independent, autonomous entity.

History

Poetry Northwest was founded in 1959 by Errol Pritchard, Carolyn Kizer, Richard Hugo, Nelson Bentley, and Edith Shiffert as a quarterly poetry journal. Initially, it gained international recognition for publishing renowned poets such as Philip Larkin, James Wright, and William Stafford. The magazine became a publication of the University of Washington in 1963. Carolyn Kizer served as the sole editor from 1964 to 1966, and David Wagoner took over, leading the magazine for 36 years. During his tenure, Poetry Northwest continued to feature both established and emerging writers.

In 2002, the publication temporarily ceased due to financial constraints. However, it has since resumed, expanding its scope to include book reviews, essays on poetics, and visual arts features.

Mission

The mission of Poetry Northwest is to serve as a gateway for emerging writers and to represent the literary landscape of the Pacific Northwest on a broader stage. It aims to maintain a focus on the printed poem while adapting to modern publishing demands. The organization seeks to intersect with readers through the exploration of poetry's connection to civic society and the arts.

Diversity and Inclusion

Poetry Northwest emphasizes inclusivity, focusing on voices from diverse backgrounds including Indigenous & Native American, Asian & Pacific Islander, Black & African American, Hispanic & Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Funding and Support

The organization receives support from various foundations, including the NEA, contributing to its operations and digital expansion.

Current Developments

Poetry Northwest continues to evolve, featuring interviews with contemporary poets and reflecting on themes such as technology, nature, and social change. It also hosts competitions, such as the James Welch Prize, to recognize emerging talent in poetry.
