Description

Community Options, Inc.

Community Options, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit organization focused on providing housing and employment supports to individuals with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injury.

History

Community Options was founded in February 1989 by Robert Stack, alongside a group of disability advocates. The organization was established with the mission of creating residential and employment supports for individuals with disabilities. Initially, it supported a smaller number of people but has since grown significantly. By 2008, Community Options was assisting over 1,400 individuals with disabilities. As of 2021, this number had increased to over 4,500 people.

The organization has been instrumental in advocating for the deinstitutionalization movement, believing that all people with disabilities should live in community-based settings rather than state-run institutions.

Key Activities

  • Residential Services: Community Options operates over 550 group homes across the United States. This includes notable concentrations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with over 150 homes in New Jersey alone.
  • Employment Opportunities: The organization operates several businesses that employ individuals with disabilities. These include Vaseful, a nonprofit flower shop; Presents of Mind, a nonprofit gift store; and The Daily Plan It, an office and conference space. These businesses provide employees with skills in retail management, customer relations, and facilities maintenance.

Annual Events

  • Cupid's Chase 5K: This annual fundraising event takes place over Valentine's Day weekend and is held in multiple cities across the U.S. It began in 2009 and has grown to include virtual participation options.
  • Annual National Conference: Community Options hosts an annual conference to discuss services and support for individuals with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries.

Awards and Recognition

Community Options annually presents the Betty Pendler Award to distinguished individuals who embody its mission. The award is named after Betty Pendler, a former board member and advocate for people with disabilities.

In 2014, the United States House of Representatives honored Community Options for its 25 years of service.

Leadership

Robert Stack serves as the President and CEO of Community Options, Inc. The organization is structured with a diverse board of directors that includes professionals from various sectors.

Impact

Community Options continues to expand its services, entering new states and increasing support for individuals with disabilities. It remains committed to its core principle of supporting self-determination and dignity for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
