Dayton Ski and Board Club
Overview
The Dayton Ski and Board Club (DSBC) is a nonprofit organization based in Dayton, Ohio, established to promote skiing, snowboarding, and various outdoor activities among enthusiasts of all skill levels. With a mission to connect local skiers and boarders, the club offers a wide range of social events, activities, and trips that cater to the interests of its members.
History
The DSBC traces its origins back to March 1952, when two friends, Howard Preston and Tom Sheetz, sparked the idea for a ski club after experiencing skiing at Boyne Mountain in Michigan. Initially known as the Ski Bees, the club began with a small group of about six members who first traveled to a ski resort to celebrate New Year's in 1953. By March 1953, they embarked on a trip to Aspen, Colorado, marking the club's first excursion to the western United States. Over the years, membership grew significantly, peaking at approximately 1,100 during the mid-1970s.
In the late 1970s, the club expanded its activities beyond winter sports, forming summer programs that included biking, tennis, and whitewater rafting. As participation grew, the club considered acquiring its own facility, although it traditionally met at various local venues such as the Christopher Club and different establishments in the Oregon District.
Activities and Programs
The Dayton Ski and Board Club provides an array of activities throughout the year, ensuring that there is something for everyone, including:
- Skiing and snowboarding trips to regional and national destinations
- Summer outdoor activities such as biking, canoeing, and houseboat trips
- Social events that foster camaraderie among members
- Seasonal gatherings and competitions to engage both novice and experienced participants
The club meets regularly, specifically on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, to plan events and foster community engagement.
Community Engagement
The DSBC prides itself on creating a welcoming environment for all individuals interested in winter sports and outdoor activities. It assists members in developing their skills while also providing opportunities for fun, social interaction, and lifelong friendships.
In addition to recreational activities, the club actively promotes the benefits of skiing and snowboarding, encouraging new participants to experience the joys of these sports and connect with like-minded individuals in the community.
Conclusion
The Dayton Ski and Board Club continues to thrive as a vibrant community of outdoor enthusiasts. With its rich history and commitment to inclusivity, the club remains a cornerstone for skiing and boarding activities in the Dayton area, offering opportunities for adventure, learning, and socializing.
