Overview
The Lupus Research Alliance Inc. is a prominent U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a complex autoimmune disease. The organization is recognized as the world's largest nongovernmental funder of lupus research.
History
The Lupus Research Alliance (LRA) was formed in 2016 through the merger of three lupus-focused organizations: the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, and the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR). The Alliance for Lupus Research was originally founded in 1999 by Robert Wood "Woody" Johnson IV, a member of the Johnson & Johnson family and owner of the New York Jets.
Mission and Research
The LRA's mission is to support medical research aimed at finding better treatments and ultimately preventing and curing lupus. It emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to science, fostering collaboration across various disciplines. Notable achievements include the funding of the 2008 International SLE Genetics Consortium (SLEGEN), which identified several genes associated with lupus.
Funding and Financial Commitment
The Lupus Research Alliance has committed over $220 million to lupus research as of 2020. Its unique financial model ensures that 100% of public donations go directly to research programs, as administrative and fundraising costs are covered by the organization's board of directors. Funding decisions are made through a rigorous peer-review process.
Strategic Plan
The LRA focuses on the full continuum of lupus research, from basic science to translational and clinical studies. This comprehensive approach positions the organization as a leader in the pursuit of lupus treatments and cures. The strategic plan involves mobilizing the community and leveraging the complexity of lupus to accelerate breakthroughs.
Community Engagement
The organization engages the public through various initiatives, including the "Walk with Us to Cure Lupus" program, which raises awareness and funds for research. Community support and involvement are central to the LRA's efforts to advance lupus research and treatment options.
