Description

DC Food Project

The DC Food Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating child hunger by increasing access to nutritious food. Founded in 2018, the organization focuses on providing additional food to school children and their families during the school day and over weekends when school meals are not available.

Mission

The mission of the DC Food Project is straightforward: to ensure that no child experiences hunger due to lack of access to nutritious food. This is achieved through unique partnerships with schools in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas.

Programs

The organization operates several programs designed to address food insecurity:

  • Pantry Program: This program acts as a discreet resource for students to receive food and other essential items throughout the school day or over weekends.

  • Community Bag Program: Tailored to support seniors, this initiative provides essential groceries to vulnerable groups.

  • Share Table Program: Implemented in schools, this program rescues unopened or uneaten school breakfast and lunch items, offering them to students who may need extra nutrition while reducing food waste.

Impact

Since its inception, the DC Food Project has provided over 3.5 million meals to students, families, and seniors. The organization continues to adapt and expand its services, particularly in response to heightened need during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

History

Inspired by local teachers who used personal funds to support hungry students, the organization was started by a group of mothers in the D.C. area. Over time, it has grown to address broader community needs and collaborate with schools, businesses, and residents.

Funding and Recognition

The DC Food Project is supported through grants and contributions. In recent years, it has received funding from entities like the Lucas Kaempfer Foundation and The DC Central Kitchen to support its hunger-fighting efforts. As of recent fiscal reports, total revenues have been primarily sourced from grants and contributions, indicating a strong support network from local and possibly national organizations.

DC Food Project launched in 2018 to provide school children and their families access to additional food during the school day and over the weekends when school meals are not available to them. Our nonprofit fills what we refer to as the gap what happens when lunch is over. This gap has an impact on tens of thousands of students with 1 in 5 children struggling with hunger in DC alone. Since our inception six years ago our team has provided over 3.
