Today in U.S. History: On June 1, 1778, the court martial of Benedict Arnold, a general in the Continental Army, began. The defendant was accused--and convicted-- of misappropriation of government property and authority for personal gain and profit. Arnold, it turned out, did a lot worse than using his position to line his own pockets. By the time of this court martial, he was already actively conspiring with the British. (fb)
