Thank you to all who have shown interest in the health of the Manatee and calf that were rescued recently. From recent updates we received from FWC, they are both continuing to do well. Staff at the Zoo in Tampa are still actively treating mom as she was significantly underweight. Both are eating and progressing well. It will be several months before they know when they can release them home. Adding to the information shared on our previous post, these two manatees were entrapped in the canal by a concrete weir. They gained access to the area due to a high-water event likely a hurricane. If you didn't know manatees breath air and can survive out of the water for several hours. After rescue, they are placed in climate-controlled transport trucks on foam pads and are kept moist during travel.
