The San Diego Police Officers Association (SDPOA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1953 to support and represent the interests of San Diego police officers. It focuses on issues related to wages, hours, and working conditions for its members.
History
Incorporated in 1953, the association has a long history of advocating for the welfare of its members. Over the years, it has worked to improve employment conditions and benefits for San Diego police officers.
Membership and Representation
SDPOA represents all classifications within the Police Unit and Police Management Unit of the San Diego Police Department, as recognized by the City of San Diego. This includes ranks such as Police Recruit, Police Officer I, II, and III, Police Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and others[1]. The association participates in collective bargaining to negotiate terms and conditions of employment on behalf of its members.
Activities and Support
In addition to its advocacy role, SDPOA provides various forms of support to its members. This includes management of charity funds like the Widows & Orphans and Memorial Funds, which assist families of fallen officers and other members in need. The association also engages in community events and fundraising efforts to foster stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community at large.
Leadership
SDPOA operates with an executive board that includes a president, secretary, and other directors. These leaders are elected from among the membership and play crucial roles in guiding the association's activities. Notable past and present board members have backgrounds in policing and community service, reflecting the organization's focus on both professional development and community engagement[5].
Mission
The overarching mission of SDPOA is to ensure that the employment conditions, rights, and benefits of San Diego police officers are protected and advanced. By advocating for better wages, safer working conditions, and stronger community relationships, the association works to enhance the overall well-being of its members and contribute to a more effective and respected police force.
