Mainframe Studios

Overview

Mainframe Studios is a financially self-sustaining nonprofit organization, recognized as the nation's largest nonprofit building dedicated to providing creative workspaces. Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the organization aims to advance equity and opportunities in the arts.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of Mainframe Studios is to provide affordable workspaces to foster a diverse creative community. By offering permanent and shareable studios, it currently supports over 220 artists across more than 30 different disciplines, including painting, sculpture, glassblowing, photography, and game development. The organization strives to create a dynamic arts ecosystem in Iowa, promoting leading-edge creative production.

History and Development

Mainframe Studios was established by Justin Mandelbaum, principal of Mandelbaum Properties, with significant support from his father John Mandelbaum. A $15 million capital campaign enabled the nonprofit to purchase and renovate its building, which opened its first floor of studios in 2017. The space is now fully renovated, featuring 180 workspaces.

Financial Structure

As a 501(c)(3) organization, Mainframe Studios operates on revenues primarily generated through program services, along with contributions. The nonprofit's financial model is designed to be self-sustaining, ensuring long-term viability and consistent support for artists. Rents are set to cover operational expenses and contribute to a reserve fund or endowment.

Community Engagement

Mainframe Studios actively engages with the local community through events like First Friday open studios, where visitors can interact with artists and experience the creative environment. The organization is committed to promoting anti-racist activism and fostering an inclusive community that supports individual expression and critical thinking.

Notable Programs and Partnerships

The organization occasionally partners with other nonprofits and community programs, such as Momentum Art Studio, which offers free art opportunities to adults with disabilities. These collaborations enhance Mainframe Studios' commitment to equity and community support.
