Description

Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association

The Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing beach preservation issues in Florida. Established in 1957, it was formed by a group of local government and university leaders who recognized the growing problem of beach erosion across the state.

Background

The association came into existence following concerns about beach erosion, which had significantly affected prominent resort beaches such as Miami Beach. The founders understood that this was a statewide issue that required collective effort beyond individual city or county capabilities.

Mission and Activities

  • Advocacy and Education: The association provides critical information to both the Florida Legislature and Congress about beach preservation issues. It collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies on matters related to beach protection.

  • Community Engagement: One of its key publications is the Shoreline newsletter, which keeps stakeholders informed about developments in beach preservation.

  • Annual Meetings: The association organizes annual meetings to discuss ongoing challenges and strategies for beach preservation. Recent meetings include the Florida Resilience Conference, which focuses on building resilience against environmental threats.

Impact

The Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association plays a vital role in ensuring that Florida's coastal regions remain resilient and attractive for future generations, both by preserving natural environments and advocating for policies that protect these areas from erosion and environmental degradation.
