Spells Writing Lab Inc. is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the creative and expository writing skills of school-age children between the ages of 6 and 18.

History

Spells Writing Lab was founded in 2009 by Jill Schiller with the support of several collaborators. It was officially recognized as a charitable organization by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in April 2009 and received its 501(c)(3) status in February 2010. Inspired by models like 826 National, Spells aims to provide engaging and personalized writing experiences for young writers.

Mission

The mission of Spells Writing Lab is to develop the literary skills of school-age children through free, fun, and imaginative writing programs. The organization emphasizes that literacy is crucial for future success and believes in offering unconventional learning opportunities to inspire students both academically and personally.

Programs

Spells offers a variety of programs, including:

  • After-school drop-in tutoring: Provides one-on-one support for students needing additional writing help.
  • Weekend writing workshops: Engaging sessions for students to explore their creativity.
  • Six-week writing intensive summer camp: An immersive writing experience designed to foster skills over several weeks.

Partnerships and Supporters

Spells partners with various organizations, such as the Mayor's PhillyGoes2College project, Painted Bride Art Center, Fairmount Art Center, and the Mural Arts Project, to offer free programs across Philadelphia. It has garnered support from notable figures like bestselling authors Elizabeth Gilbert, Lisa Scottoline, Jennifer Weiner, and Buzz Bissinger, among others.

Volunteer Network

Spells relies on a network of volunteers, including authors, journalists, poets, teachers, and other professionals. These volunteers play a crucial role in mentoring and guiding students in their writing endeavors.

Operations and Locations

Initially based on the campus of the Village of Arts and Humanities in North Philadelphia, Spells later moved its operations to the Crane Arts Old School building in Olde Kensington to expand its programming offerings.

Internship and Co-op Programs

Spells collaborates with local universities such as Ursinus College, Drexel University, Haverford College, and Temple University to offer internship and co-op opportunities. These programs provide students with apprenticeship-style experiences under the mentorship of literary professionals.
