Evergreen Cemetery Association
The Evergreen Cemetery Association is a nonprofit organization responsible for the management and maintenance of Evergreen Cemetery in Bristol, New York. The cemetery, founded in 1888, serves as a burial site with historical significance, dating back more than a century. It is the final resting place for many of Bristol's pioneer families and includes graves of several Revolutionary War veterans.
History
Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1888, but its use as a burial site predates its formal founding. The original graveyard area has been expanded over time, providing a peaceful rural setting for families of various religious faiths and traditions.
Governance and Support
The association is governed by a board of trustees, who are responsible for managing the cemetery. Financial support has been augmented since 1927 by a trust fund established by the Newton family, Bristol natives who were successful in business and sought to honor their roots by contributing to the community.
Features and Significance
Evergreen Cemetery is notable for its historical significance and diverse population of interred individuals. It hosts numerous old gravestones and monuments, along with veterans' graves, creating a site of both historical and personal significance for visitors.
Public Access
The cemetery is open to the public from dawn until dusk, welcoming visitors who respect the peaceful nature of the grounds. It is located adjacent to the United Church of Bristol but is separately governed.
Mission
The mission of the Evergreen Cemetery Association is to provide a respectful and dignified space for burial and remembrance, ensuring that this historical site continues to serve as a tranquil retreat for both residents and visitors.
