The We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) is a non-profit organization based in New York. Established after the September 11 attacks, WAFF was founded by musician Nile Rodgers and Nancy Hunt. The organization is dedicated to empowering young leaders worldwide through programs that address human needs, systemic racism, and advocacy.
Programs
- Three Dot Dash: Supports projects addressing basic human needs.
- Youth To The Front Fund: Focused on supporting under-30-year-old youth activists and organizations fighting systemic racism, inequality, and injustice.

- TEDxTeen: Amplifies the voice of young innovators and change-makers.
WAFF has partnered with organizations like buildOn to build elementary schools in countries such as Mali, Malawi, Nepal, and Nicaragua. Its programs have engaged young leaders from over 70 countries across the globe.
Mission and Impact
The foundation envisions a global family through fostering community, leadership, and social impact. It champions, mentors, and amplifies the efforts of young people to create global change. In recent years, WAFF has formalized partnerships with international bodies like UNESCO to combat discrimination worldwide.
In recognition of its contributions, Nile Rodgers received the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award in 2024 for promoting peace, equality, and inclusivity through music and youth advocacy.
Governance and Operations
The organization is governed by a diverse board committed to inclusivity and race equity. While specific financial details are not publicly disclosed, WAFF relies on donations and grants to support its global initiatives.
Overall, the We Are Family Foundation plays a significant role in empowering youth leaders globally to drive positive change and social justice.

“When it comes to our shared humanity, I’m always going to be there because… without WE, there is no me.” – Angélique Kidjo, Singer, Songwriter & Founder of The Batonga Foundation We are honored to welcome Angélique Kidjo — world-renowned artist, activist, and founder of the Batonga Foundation — to the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) Board of Directors! With a career spanning 16 albums, five Grammy Awards, and global recognition from TIME, The Guardian, BBC, and more, Angélique uses her platform to uplift, inspire, and drive change. Angélique’s work advocating for girls' education across Africa through the Batonga Foundation and her experience in humanitarian leadership with UNICEF and Oxfam deeply align with WAFF’s mission to support youth-led social impact worldwide. We are inspired by her leadership and look forward to building a more just, creative, and inclusive world — together. #WeAreFamily (fb)
