Urban Learning and Teaching Center (Urban Adventure Squad)
Introduction
The Urban Learning and Teaching Center, also known as the Urban Adventure Squad (UAS), is a Washington, D.C.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit education organization. It focuses on providing equitable, community-based outdoor learning programs for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. UAS utilizes the city as a classroom, integrating hands-on learning with community resources to enhance educational experiences.
Mission and Programs
The organization's mission is to connect students with their neighborhoods through curriculum-aligned activities in science, history, math, art, engineering, and writing. UAS collaborates with schools and community groups to offer full-day programs during out-of-school time, including professional development days, federal holidays, and school breaks. These programs emphasize hands-on projects, trail hiking, neighborhood exploration, and interaction with local experts from various fields.
Key Components
- Experiential Learning: UAS prioritizes experiential learning by engaging students in physical activities such as hiking and outdoor experiments. This approach fosters social-emotional growth, encourages movement, and adapts to the needs of each group.
- Community Integration: The organization leverages local resources, partnering with businesses, nonprofits, and community educators to provide diversified learning experiences. This includes visits to urban farms, behind-the-scenes tours of local theaters, and environmental science programs.
- Equity and Accessibility: UAS values equity in outdoor learning and offers a no-questions-asked full scholarship rate to ensure all students can participate.
Leadership
The leadership includes the executive director and founder, along with a director of programming and a Board of Directors. UAS Squad Leaders, or program educators, play a central role in developing and delivering curricula.
Model
The UAS model is built on four pillars:
- Leveraging Community Resources to enhance experiential learning.
- Meticulous Curriculum Development to ensure age-appropriate content.
- Hands-on and Physical Learning to engage students actively.
- Curiosity and Fun to foster a love for learning through exploration.
Impact
By connecting students with their communities, UAS aims to build confidence, foster new friendships, and inspire environmental advocacy among participants. The organization supports over 80 schools in the Washington area and continually develops new curricula to expand its impact.
