The Davidson County Education Foundation

The Davidson County Education Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enriching educational opportunities within Davidson County, North Carolina. Established in November 1991 and officially chartered on March 16, 1992, the foundation's mission is to provide innovative programs benefiting students in the Davidson County Public School System.

Founding and History

The Davidson County Education Foundation was founded by local businessman Bernard H. Thomas and a group of dedicated residents. Initially, Thomas envisioned a foundation focused on the Children's Center, but under the guidance of Superintendent Max Walser, it evolved into a broader organization supporting the entire school system. Thomas played a pivotal role as the foundation's first president. Despite his passing in 1993, his legacy of community engagement continues to inspire the foundation's activities.

Programs and Activities

The foundation supports several key programs:

  • Bernard H. Thomas Student Leadership Academy: Fosters leadership skills among students.
  • STARS - Students Teaching and Reaching for Success Academy: Encourages academic achievement and personal growth.
  • Project Potential and Endowed Scholarships: Offers financial assistance to deserving students.
  • Teacher Mini-Grant Program: Supports teachers in implementing innovative classroom projects.
  • Annual Fundraising Events: Includes a 5K walk/run and a golf tournament to raise funds for educational enrichment.
Governance and Operations

The foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors composed of local school supporters. Board members serve three-year terms, with the option to serve a second term. The organization has one paid administrative director and relies on volunteer efforts to manage its programs and fundraising activities.

Tax-Exempt Status and Donations

As a 501(c)(3) organization, donations to the foundation are tax-deductible. Donors can contribute funds or assets, including stocks and real estate, and may designate gifts in honor or memory of individuals. The foundation encourages estate planning to ensure ongoing support for Davidson County's educational initiatives.

Community Impact

Through its programs and events, the Davidson County Education Foundation plays a significant role in enhancing educational experiences for students in Davidson County. By honoring school employees and engaging the community, the foundation promotes a culture of appreciation and support for local education.
