League of Human Dignity

The League of Human Dignity is a nonprofit, consumer-controlled organization dedicated to promoting independent living for individuals with disabilities. It operates as a nonresidential, community-based entity with a mission to ensure social, economic, and political equality for people with disabilities.

History

The League of Human Dignity was founded in response to the growing need for support and advocacy for individuals with disabilities, particularly during the civil rights movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was influenced by the independent living movement, which emphasized self-empowerment and consumer control. The organization began as a grassroots initiative in Lincoln, Nebraska, and has since expanded to serve communities across Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

• Assistance in Affordable Housing: Helps individuals find and pay for accessible housing.

• Equipment Loan and Rental: Provides access to specialized equipment for daily living.
• Services Coordination: Coordinates services under Nebraska’s Medicaid Waiver for Adults with Disabilities in all counties across the state.

The League operates Centers for Independent Living in Lincoln, Norfolk, Omaha, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, with additional services in other locations across Nebraska.
