League of Human Dignity

The League of Human Dignity is a nonprofit, consumer-controlled organization dedicated to promoting independent living for individuals with disabilities. It operates as a nonresidential, community-based entity with a mission to ensure social, economic, and political equality for people with disabilities.

History

The League of Human Dignity was founded in response to the growing need for support and advocacy for individuals with disabilities, particularly during the civil rights movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was influenced by the independent living movement, which emphasized self-empowerment and consumer control. The organization began as a grassroots initiative in Lincoln, Nebraska, and has since expanded to serve communities across Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

Services

The League offers a range of services to support independent living, including:

• Independent Living Skills Training: Offers skills development to help individuals manage daily tasks and live independently.
• Information and Referral: Provides resources and connections to community services.
• Transition Services: Assists individuals transitioning from institutions to community-based living and supports youth transitioning to post-secondary life.
• Peer Counseling and Support: Offers peer-based support networks for individuals with disabilities.
• Individual and Systems Advocacy: Advocates for the rights of individuals with disabilities at both personal and systemic levels.
• Assistance in Affordable Housing: Helps individuals find and pay for accessible housing.
• Financial Benefits Counseling: Assists in assessing and accessing financial benefits.
• Equipment Loan and Rental: Provides access to specialized equipment for daily living.
• Services Coordination: Coordinates services under Nebraska’s Medicaid Waiver for Adults with Disabilities in all counties across the state.

Mission

The League's mission is to promote the full integration of people with disabilities into society. It seeks to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal opportunities to live, work, and contribute within their communities, free from institutional barriers and societal discrimination.

Locations

The League operates Centers for Independent Living in Lincoln, Norfolk, Omaha, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, with additional services in other locations across Nebraska.

Through its services and advocacy, the League has influenced state legislation and city policies related to accessibility and disability rights. It continues to be a vital resource for individuals with disabilities, supporting their independence and quality of life.
