Just a short distance from this important site, the Asian Legacy Library’s Varanasi Center carries forward this legacy through the preservation of ancient Indian texts, particularly those of the Buddhist tradition.

As part of the Asian Legacy Library’s ongoing collaboration with the Erdene Zuu Library in Mongolia, Project Manager Lama Gongor Chuluundorj and the team at Erdene Zuu recently undertook the preservation of two remarkable Tibetan texts: a beautifully preserved blockprint sādhanā and a manuscript of a heartfelt supplication prayer—both dedicated to Maitreya, the future Buddha and symbol of universal love and compassion. These rare works were composed by the esteemed Khalkha Mongolian scholar Ngawang Khedrup (1779–1838), whose profound scholarship and spiritual leadership left an enduring legacy in Mongolia’s Buddhist tradition. As abbot of Ikh Khüree—the main seat of the Jebtsundampas—Ngawang Khedrup played a pivotal role in transforming the monastery into a vibrant center of Buddhist learning.
