💔 Jewish Divorce and Coercive Control: When a Get Becomes a Weapon 💔 Last week the International Beit Din, in partnership with the Gruss Program at NYU Law held a historic conference “Redefining Freedom: Examining the Agunah Crisis through the Lens of Coercive Control.” Hundreds of rabbis, lawyers, agunot, communal leaders and community members were in attendance. In Jewish law, a religious divorce (get) must be given willingly by the husband to the wife. But when that get is withheld — sometimes for months, years, or even decades — it’s not just a legal issue. It’s coercive control. 📌 Refusing to give a get is a form of psychological abuse. 📌 It can be used to punish, manipulate, or extort a partner after separation. 📌 It traps women in religious limbo — unable to remarry, move forward, or fully reclaim their lives. 📌 Coercive control unifies abuse and agunot under a framework of systematic domination. 📌 Legal and communal shifts are needed to address non-violent yet devastating forms of abuse. This is not just about tradition. It’s about power, autonomy, and dignity. It's about saying: "You cannot go free until I say so." Coercive control doesn’t always look like violence — but it causes lasting harm. And it almost never begins at the time of divorce. ✡️ Judaism teaches compassion, justice, and the importance of shalom bayit (peace in the home). Holding someone hostage in a broken marriage is the opposite of that. 🗣️ Let’s break the silence. 📚 Educate ourselves, our leadership and our communities. 💪 Support agunot — women chained to marriages against their will. ⚖️ Push for legal and halachic solutions that protect dignity and freedom. #JewishDivorce #CoerciveControl #AgunahCrisis #GetRefusal #EmotionalAbuse #JewishValues #FreeHer (fb)
