Rainbow Senior Center
The Rainbow Senior Center, now known as The Center, is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults in Boerne, Texas. Founded in 1983, it began as a nutrition program supported by local churches and the Benedictine Sisters, who provided kitchen and dining space for the Boerne Area Nutrition Project.
History
The organization started with a small grassroots effort to address the nutritional needs of seniors in the community. Initially, it operated under the name of the Boerne Area Nutrition Project but was later renamed "Rainbow Senior Center" through a community contest. The name captured the essence of the center as a gathering place where seniors could find fellowship and support.
As the program grew, the Rainbow Senior Center moved into the Boerne Community Center and later utilized the gym of the Benedictine Sisters. In 2000, through significant donations from supporters like Martha Lattimore and the Kronkosky Foundation, a new building was constructed on San Antonio Road. The Kronkosky Foundation played a pivotal role in expanding the center's capacity, making it a signature project for Kendall County.
Evolution and Programs
In 2010, the facility was named Kronkosky Place, marking an expansion of services beyond nutrition to include social, health, and lifestyle programs for older adults. By 2022, the organization underwent another transformation, adopting the name "The Center," to reflect its comprehensive offerings. These include arts and culture activities, fitness classes, wellness screenings, and transportation services, as well as its Meals on Wheels program to combat social isolation and address nutritional needs.
Mission and Impact
The Center's mission focuses on enriching the quality of life for older adults, guiding them to live well as they age. It promotes opportunities for active retirees to engage in leisure activities while also supporting homebound neighbors through daily wellness checks and meal deliveries. The organization is heavily reliant on volunteers, who lead and orchestrate various activities and programs.
Governance and Leadership
The organization is overseen by a board of directors comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, including business owners, retired volunteers, and local professionals. The board ensures an inclusive recruitment process and conducts regular assessments of its performance and leadership.
Financial Support and Development
Financial support has been crucial to the organization's growth, with significant contributions from the Kronkosky Foundation and other community donors like T. Boone Pickens. These funds have enabled The Center to develop and expand its services in support of older adults.
