In February of 1906, the DC Society of the NSCDA petitioned Congress, “Praying for the preservation of Niagara Falls”. The petition was endorsed by the state societies of Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Later that year, Congress passed the Burton Act, which saved the falls from being turned into a hydroelectric dam. As stewards of history, we recognize that preserving the past also means caring for the world we share today. From maintaining historic landscapes to protecting heirloom gardens and native ecosystems at our museum properties, Dames are committed to conservation—because a sustainable future honors our heritage Let’s continue to protect our planet, one story, one tree, one historic site at a time. 💚 #EarthDay (fb)

Happy National Haiku Day! 🎴 Today, we’re celebrating the beauty of simplicity and the power of poetry to capture our mission. Have a haiku of your own about history, heritage, or the Dames? Share it in the comments! #NationalHaikuDay (fb)
