American Society of Interior Designers
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is a prominent nonprofit organization in the United States, dedicated to advancing the interior design profession. Founded in 1975, ASID is the result of a merger between two predecessor organizations: the American Institute of Interior Designers (AID), which was initially known as the American Institute of Decorators formed in 1931, and the National Society of Interior Designers (NSID), established in 1957.
History
ASID's roots trace back to the early 20th century, when interior design began to gain recognition as a profession. The American Institute of Decorators (later AID) was initially formed as a social club but evolved into a more professional structure over time. The National Society of Interior Designers (NSID) emerged in the 1950s with a focus on professionalizing interior design practices. The merger of AID and NSID in 1975 created a unified body that has since become instrumental in shaping the interior design profession.
Programs and Initiatives
ASID focuses on education, community building, advocacy, and initiatives that support the development of the interior design profession. Key initiatives include:
- Education and Accreditation: ASID works to establish and promote standards for interior design education and accreditation, ensuring high-quality training for professionals.
- Sustainability: The organization has emphasized sustainability in design practices, partnering with groups like the U.S. Green Building Council to promote environmentally responsible design.
- Legislative Advocacy: ASID has been active in advocating for interior designers' rights, particularly in securing title acts that regulate the use of the term "interior designer" to ensure only qualified individuals can use this title.
Membership and Chapters
ASID has over 25,000 members across its network of chapters, including students, professionals, educators, and industry partners. The organization offers various membership categories, such as Professional, Allied, Educator, Student, and Industry Partner memberships. It supports a wide range of career stages, providing opportunities for networking, education, and professional development.
Governance and Vision
ASID is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors, which oversees strategic direction and policy development. The organization values diversity and inclusivity, striving to foster a diverse community within the design profession. Its vision is to advance the interior design profession and communicate the impact of design on the human experience.
Affiliated Organizations
The ASID Foundation is a charitable arm that supports research and scholarship in interior design, focusing on health, safety, and welfare. Additionally, ASID maintains partnerships with other relevant organizations, such as the U.S. Green Building Council, to promote sustainable practices in design.
Impact
ASID's work has contributed significantly to the recognition and professionalization of interior design. Through its programs, advocacy efforts, and community engagement, ASID continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the interior design industry.
