Overview

Camp Hadar Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. It operates as a co-ed day camp, providing a fun, safe, and rewarding camping experience with an emphasis on personal growth, friendship, and fun in a Jewish cultural environment.

History

The campsite where Camp Hadar resides has been home to a Jewish day camp since 1960. Originally known as the Lawrence Jewish Community Center Camp, it later became the Merrimack Valley Jewish Community Day Camp before it closed in 1993. The Merrimack Valley Jewish Federation revived the camp as Camp Hadar in 1995, focusing on community support for a Jewish cultural day camp experience. By 2022, Camp Hadar transitioned into an independent nonprofit organization, maintaining its commitment to the local community while broadening its ability to collaborate and expand programs.

Activities and Programs

Located on 17 acres of scenic woods and sandy beach on Captain's Pond in Salem, New Hampshire, Camp Hadar offers an array of activities for children aged 4 to 16. These include sports like basketball, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and arts and crafts programs. The camp emphasizes a low staff-to-camper ratio to foster a nurturing environment, focusing on values such as honesty, caring, responsibility, and respect.

Financial Information

Camp Hadar's primary sources of revenue include contributions and program services, with minimal support from other sources like investments. The organization's financial statements indicate a stable financial position, with total assets valued over $67,000 as of its most recent reporting period.

Leadership

Key figures include Jonathan Heller, who serves as Camp Director, along with John Shuman as President, Kimberly Donahue as Secretary, Allison Donahue as Treasurer, and Richard Issenberg as a Director. The director is the only compensated position, with a salary of $20,000 as per recent filings.

Impact

Despite its historical roots in serving the Jewish community, Camp Hadar welcomes children from all faiths, promoting an inclusive and culturally enriching environment. The camp's independence as a nonprofit allows it to pursue external funding opportunities, ensuring ongoing support for its programs and community.
