For many New Yorkers, SNAP can be the difference between having food and going hungry. Yet, a House budget proposal includes drastic cuts that endanger access to this critical nutrition lifeline. If these proposed cuts are enacted, New York would need to cover 25 percent of SNAP benefits costs—an estimated $1.8 billion in 2028 alone—and 75 percent of the administrative costs. State budgets cannot absorb these costs. That means children, seniors, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable New Yorkers will go hungry. Congress must protect SNAP and Medicaid.
