We’re working hard to raise awareness about the devastating impact Medicaid cuts would have on Illinois. In a recent article for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Thresholds President and CEO Mark Ishaug and Dave Sharar of Chestnut Health Systems sound the alarm: proposed Medicaid cuts would harm communities across Illinois. “These clients need accessible, barrier-free care from someone they trust, and they can’t wait for it.” At Thresholds, we see firsthand how Medicaid supports recovery for individuals with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and housing instability. Cutting this funding would strain emergency rooms, jails, and local systems statewide. “A year of Thresholds’ most intensive level of community-based wraparound mental health services with almost daily visits costs an average of $18,000. Conversely, a year in Cook County jail cost $47,450 in 2023, and IDOC reports a yearly inmate cost of $45,828 in FY22." Illinois can’t afford to move backward.
