Tucson Botanical Gardens
The Tucson Botanical Gardens (TBG) is a 5.5-acre collection of 20 gardens located in the heart of Tucson, Arizona, United States. Founded in 1964 by horticulturist Harrison G. Yocum, the gardens have evolved into a vibrant urban oasis, connecting people with plants and nature through art, science, history, and culture.
History
Tucson Botanical Gardens was originally established by Harrison G. Yocum at his home on North Jefferson Street. The organization grew rapidly, and by 1968, memberships became available, and it was chartered as a non-profit corporation in 1969. In 1974, TBG moved to its current location on the historic Porter Family property, which was donated by Bernice Porter to the City of Tucson in 1968. The property was officially developed into a botanical garden by the Tucson City Council's Resolution 9384, aiming to create a horticultural center, a sanctuary for wild birds, and an educational facility.
Gardens and Features
The gardens include a diverse range of themes such as the Cactus and Succulent Garden, Barrio Garden, Children's Garden, and Herb Garden, showcasing the plant diversity of the Sonoran Desert. Notably, the Cox Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion features tropical butterflies and orchids from around the world from October to May. The gardens also host rotating art displays, community classes, and international exhibits.
Educational Programs and Events
Tucson Botanical Gardens offers a variety of educational resources and public events throughout the year. Docent training began in 1982, followed by Educational Outreach programs in 1986. The gardens host annual events like the Luminaria celebration and the Butterfly Magic exhibit, which started in 2004.
Community Engagement and Growth
Since its inception, TBG has expanded its offerings, including the addition of an outdoor amphitheater, compost demonstration area, Butterfly Garden, and multicultural exhibits. A new educational building was constructed in 2000. The gardens have continued to grow, with plans for further expansion and development outlined in a 25-year master plan completed in 2019.
Recognition and Accolades
Tucson Botanical Gardens was ranked fourth in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice awards for Best Botanical Garden in 2023, reflecting its reputation as a premier small public garden in America.

🐝🐝 We're celebrating WORLD BEE DAY!🐝🐝 THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES: 🐝 Arizona is one of the most bee diverse places on Earth with 1,300 species! 🐝 Most native bees nest in the ground or in borer tunnels in dead trees. 🐝 Arizona native bees don't produce honey in hives like honey bees, an imported species. 🐝 Native bees pollinate native plants and are crucial to the health of the Sonoran Desert. 🐝 Native bees won't sting or chase you or go after your picnic lunch. Check out TBG's Bee Nesting Habitats by sculptor Greg Corman, you'll find them in the NE corner of the Gardens. These sculptures are drilled with tunnels that native bees use for nesting spaces. Eggs laid in the tunnels hatch and turn into mature adults that emerge within a year. (fb)

The butterflies flutter away on May 31! 🦋 Catch Butterfly Magic before it closes for the summer, but don't worry, they'll be back again in October! . . #tucsonbotanicalgardens #tucsonbotanical #botanicalgardens #gardensofinstagram #publicgarden #desertgarden #desertoasis #arizonagarden #tucsonlocal #tucsonaz #plantsmakepeoplehappy #visittucson #visittucsonpartnership #vamosatucson #butterflies #butterflymagic #greenhouse #tropical (fb)
