Walnut Creek Rifle Club
The Walnut Creek Rifle Club is a nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(7) social and recreational club, categorized under recreation, sports, leisure, athletics, and fishing and hunting clubs[3]. Its mission is to encourage recreational rifle and pistol shooting within its community, fostering a broader commitment to marksmanship and firearms safety[4].
History
Founded in 1934, the club was established by a group of enthusiasts including Bud Anderson, Chuck McClymont, Carl Weinheimer, Joe Wiggins, Roy Stanbro, and Ralph McCrea. Initially, the property needed clearing to facilitate target shooting out to 100 yards. The club became officially incorporated on November 12, 1942. During World War II, many members enlisted in the military, temporarily halting competitive activities[1].
In the post-war period, the club experienced significant growth, with notable achievements including hosting the NRA Sectional National Indoor Rifle Championship starting in 1962. The club's Smallbore rifle team dominated the Northwestern Pennsylvania Rifle League from 1967 to 1973, winning 125 consecutive matches[1].
Facilities and Activities
Today, the Walnut Creek Rifle Club offers multiple shooting ranges:
- Outdoor Rifle Range: Equipped with targets at 50 yards and 100 yards, this range is sheltered and features concrete bench rests. It operates under the supervision of a range officer and does not permit .50 cal BMG firearms. Muzzle loaders are welcome[2].
- Pistol Range: Provides target stations at 21 feet, 45 feet, and 75 feet. The firing line is sheltered and paved, with a concrete bench rest available at 25 yards. Rifles and muzzle loaders are allowed on this range, which operates year-round from 8 AM until dusk[2].
- Archery Range: Open daily from 8 AM until dusk, with targets set up at four different distances[2].
The club also hosts various shooting events and competitions throughout the year, maintaining a strong community focus.
Membership and Development
After experiencing a decline in membership, the club was rejuvenated in the 1970s through loans from members to cover taxes and enhance facilities. This led to a steady increase in membership, reaching over 250 by 1980. As of recent years, the Walnut Creek Rifle Club boasts more than 800 members, thanks to ongoing community support and engagement[1].
