ALLEGHENY RIVER TRAIL IN CLARION COUNTY
Allegheny River Trail in Clarion County
Overview
The Allegheny River Trail in Clarion County is a volunteer-led, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to developing a non-motorized bike and hiking trail along the Allegheny River. The trail aims to connect Emlenton to Foxburg and eventually extend south from the Parker Bridge to Upper Hillville, both within Clarion County. This project is part of a larger initiative to create a continuous trail along the Allegheny River in the region.
Mission
The organization's mission includes fundraising, trail development, and promoting recreational activities such as hiking, camping, boating, fishing, and more. It also focuses on creating educational and historical displays to enhance public understanding of the trail's recreational opportunities.
History
Efforts to establish this trail have been ongoing for almost two decades, with a changing group of volunteers. Significant progress was made after the organization received notable grants and donations, including those from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. One of the notable achievements is the purchase of nearly two acres of land in Foxburg adjacent to the Route 58 bridge, which will serve as a trailhead and public park.
Projects and Goals
The organization is focused on closing two key gaps in the larger Erie to Pittsburgh Trail: the three-mile gap between Emlenton and Foxburg, and the six-plus miles from the Parker Bridge to Upper Hillville. The North Country Trail parallels the Allegheny River Trail north of the Parker Bridge, integrating with other regional trails.
In addition to trail construction, ARTinCC plans to develop a municipal park at the river's edge in Foxburg. This park will feature a boat launch, fishing areas, and potentially a gazebo, serving as a hub for various outdoor activities.
Funding and Support
The organization relies heavily on volunteer efforts and donations to meet its objectives. Donations are crucial not only for funding projects but also for demonstrating broad community support, which can influence grant decisions from foundations and corporations.
Tax-Exempt Status
Allegheny River Trail in Clarion County was granted tax-exempt status in December 2018.
Activities and Engagement
Community engagement is a key part of the organization's activities. It invites members of the public to get involved through volunteering, donating, or joining as members. This engagement helps in expanding the reach and impact of the trail by providing free recreational opportunities and boosting local economies.
