For families of incoming Beacons, it’s true that college classes will be a new challenge – but Valpo faculty are here to help them every step of the way as they adjust to a new learning environment. One of many key resources our professors offer students is designated office hours, a safe space where students can gather to discuss coursework, review exams, and catch up. Office hours are designated times in your professor’s schedule when you can drop by their office to talk – whether that’s about homework, exam review, or just to chat. “Office hours are important for students to be able to meet, discuss course work, and review exams. … They also know [office hours] are a safe place to just talk or decompress about the stress of classes,” says Valparaiso University College of Nursing & Health Professions Assistant Professor of Nursing and Program Director for the RN to BSN program Kelly Migler, DNP. Additionally, office hours give students the opportunity to really connect with their professors – and vice versa. “Office hours allow professors the capability of mentoring their students and helping them decide which path forward … is right for them,” says Lisa Tam, administrative assistant to the dean of the College of Engineering. “It also allows students and professors the chance to really get to know each other, so that when a student needs a reference or a recommendation letter, the professor knows the student well enough to provide a strong personal reference.” We encourage all students – especially first-year Beacons – to take advantage of this core support system as they step into this new chapter of their lives.
