Ppha Pregnancy and Postpartum Health Alliance of Texas
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) mothers are often overlooked in maternal mental health care, stemming from historical trauma, systemic racism, and cultural disconnect from healthcare. Many AI/AN mothers experience emotional distress and depression during their perinatal period, but modern healthcare is not sensitive to Indigenous values or traditional practices. These barriers inhibit AI/AN mothers from getting the quality care they deserve and contribute to the high pregnancy-associated deaths within the community.

Black mothers are more likely to experience maternal mental health conditions but are less likely to receive treatment. This disparity is influenced by factors such as trauma, structural racism, and provider bias that inhibit these mothers from receiving timely and quality care. Despite experiencing symptoms or being diagnosed with a mental health condition, most Black mothers go untreated, which affects their long-term health as well as that of their child's.
