Description

California Thoroughbred Horsemen's Foundation, Inc.

The California Thoroughbred Horsemen's Foundation, Inc. (CTHF) is a nonprofit organization established in 1984, though it was conceived earlier, with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for backstretch workers associated with Thoroughbred horse racing in California. The organization's mission focuses on providing essential services, primarily medical and dental care, to support the well-being of these workers and their families.

History

The CTHF was founded with a vision to support workers involved in the care of Thoroughbred racehorses at major race tracks, fair circuit tracks, and CHRB recognized off-track training centers in California.

Services Provided

The foundation offers a comprehensive range of services including:

  • Primary Medical Care: General health services are available to eligible workers.
  • Dental Care: Essential dental services are provided to maintain oral health.
  • Optometry Services: Vision care is also included to ensure proper eye health.
  • Referrals: When specialized care is needed, CTHF arranges referrals to external medical and dental providers with negotiated agreements in place.
  • Additional Support: Contributions toward funeral services and access to a thrift shop offering free clothing for workers and their families are also available.

Eligibility

To receive services from CTHF, individuals must hold a valid California Horse Racing Board license in eligible backstretch worker categories. These categories include hot walkers, grooms, trainers, assistant trainers, exercise riders, pony riders, and stable foremen. Additionally, services are extended to legal dependents, such as spouses and children under 18, or full-time students up to 23 years of age who reside in the United States.

Recognition and Funding

CTHF is a grantee of the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), indicating recognition of its contributions to the welfare of backstretch workers in the thoroughbred racing industry.

Who We Are Incorporated in 1984 the California Thoroughbred Horsemens Foundation CTHF provides medical and dental services to eligible backstretch workers at racetracks in the state. Our patient services include primary medical dental optometry care contributions toward funeral services and a Thrift Shop at our Santa Anita offices offering free clothing for the workers and their families. When more specialized care is needed we are able to send patients to outside medical and dental providers or imaging facilities with which we have negotiated favorable Provider agreements. A current and valid California Horse Racing Board license in one of the eligible backstretch worker categories is required in order to obtain services.
