JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo is home to 158 chimpanzees, but #DidYouKnow that the team cares for other injured and rescued wildlife, too? 🤩🌿 One exciting addition last year was a male putty-nosed monkey like the one in the photo above — also known at the greater spot-nosed monkey, but that's not as fun to say! After one of the Tchimpounga Nature Reserve rangers confiscated him in a nearby town, the monkey — whom the team named Carlos — was diagnosed with an injury affecting his vision. Though he is not completely blind, the impairment is significant enough that special precautions had to be taken. 🩺💚 Following his quarantine period, the team paired Carlos solely with a talapoin conveniently named Talapoin — the smallest and gentlest member of the monkey group at Tchimpounga — to foster a sense of security as he adjusts to his new environment. Talapoin and Carlos are housed in a separate enclosure connected to another monkey enclosure by a metal grid wall, allowing for safe social interactions among all four monkeys. 🐒🌱 While the team is still assessing Carlos’s eligibility for release, we are hopeful that time and care will show his resilient spirit! 💪 Learn more about the wildlife under Tchimpounga's care in our annual report publications! >> https://janegoodall.org/about/publications/ 📸 JGI/Fernando Turmo #PuttyNosedMonkey #MonkeyConservation #WildlifeRehabilitation (fb)
