Everything needs a good foundation. With the completion of work on the steel beams in the vestibule of Parlor Car 1049, next was replacing the end sills. These end sills support the end framing of the car and the bottom of the diaphragm. The first task was to remove the remaining original end sills. Because all knowledge of how these sills were assembled has been lost to time, it was vital that at least one of the beams could be kept intact for research. Unfortunately, one end was completely rotten, and the other had significant rot damage to the center. It took three people to gently remove the intact end sill from the Parlor Car. From there, our shipwright began measuring the surviving holes, draft gear, and brackets to formulate a plan. Luckily, there was just enough information remaining to accomplish this! Historically, these end sills would have been shaped out of one solid 9-foot piece of 8x12 oak. However, oak of this size is very difficult, almost impossible, to come by today.
