The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES:To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.

American Legion

The American Legion is a nonprofit organization and the largest wartime veterans service organization in the United States. It was founded from March 15 to 17, 1919, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris, France, following the end of World War I[1][4].

History

The idea of creating a veterans organization was conceived by Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and other officers due to concerns about low morale among troops awaiting return home from Europe and the potential for social unrest similar to the Bolshevik revolutions in other parts of Europe[5]. The organization's name was officially adopted at a caucus in Paris, with Lt. Col. Roosevelt Jr. playing a key role in its inception[5].

A national charter was granted by the U.S. Congress on September 16, 1919, marking the official establishment of the American Legion as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness[3][4]. Over the years, the charter has been amended several times to admit veterans from subsequent conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and more recent military operations[2].

Mission and Activities

The American Legion focuses on several key areas:

  • Veterans Advocacy: The organization is dedicated to advocating for benefits and services for veterans, including medical care and education support. It played a crucial role in establishing the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) and advocating for laws like the GI Bill, which provided extensive benefits to World War II veterans and later to veterans of other conflicts[2][4].

  • Community and Youth Development: The Legion sponsors numerous youth programs, such as the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Baseball, designed to promote civic engagement and educational opportunities for young people. It also supports the Boy Scouts of America and organizes events like the Junior Shooting Sports National Air Rifle Championships[2][3].

  • Social Services: The organization offers various social services, including support for families affected by military deployment and assistance programs for veterans seeking employment or benefits[1][3].

Structure

The American Legion operates through a network of local posts organized into departments, with a membership of over 2.4 million in about 14,000 posts worldwide across 55 departments, including the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines[3]. Its national headquarters are located in Indianapolis, Indiana[4].

Impact

Throughout its history, the American Legion has had a significant impact on veterans' rights and community development in the United States. Its advocacy efforts have shaped federal policies on veterans' healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. The organization's commitment to fostering American values and supporting future generations through youth programs has been a key part of its mission since its inception[1][3].
