Frederic Church was both a painter and amateur scientist, he was inspired by Darwin and Humboldt’s writings on Cotopaxi, Ecuador's volcano. He saw it as both a symbol of divine creation and a clue to the earth's origins. On his first trip to Ecuador, Church waited a day for the clouds to clear to fully capture the light against the volcano’s icy peak.
