Twin Lakes Playhouse Inc
Overview
Twin Lakes Playhouse Inc is a US nonprofit organization located in Mountain Home, Arkansas. It was initially founded in 1971 by George Smith, the former manager of the Baxter Bulletin[1][4]. Despite the founding in 1971, the organization overview lists it as being established in 1987, possibly reflecting a reorganization or formalization of its status[5].
History
The Playhouse began its activities with rehearsals and set building in members' garages, with performances held at Mountain Home High School. After the school repurposed its auditorium for classrooms, Twin Lakes Playhouse moved to the Ramada Inn for dinner theater productions. These productions were successful but required significant logistical effort, including transporting sets built in garages to the venue[1].
In 1979, the organization purchased a building in Midway, which served as a permanent location for storage and rehearsals. Productions continued at the Ramada Inn until 1984, when the first show was performed at the Midway theater. This change allowed for sets to be built on-site, reducing the need for transport[1].
Relocation and Expansion
In 2000, Twin Lakes Playhouse relocated to a larger, more convenient location in Mountain Home. This move was facilitated by fundraising efforts and volunteer contributions, which enabled remodeling and expansion of the new theater. The current location offers improved seating and stage facilities, contributing to increased attendance[1].
Mission and Activities
Twin Lakes Playhouse aims to entertain, enrich, and educate through community involvement in live theater. The organization presents a variety of stage plays, including comedies, dramas, mysteries, and children's plays. It actively seeks community participation, offering roles for actors, directors, set builders, and other technical support staff[2][3].
Productions and Impact
The Playhouse initially offered only two productions annually but has expanded to strive for five productions per year. This growth reflects the organization's success in engaging the community and attracting a wider audience. Twin Lakes Playhouse has become a significant cultural force in North Central Arkansas, contributing to both local entertainment and education[1][2].
