Description

The Hughes Amateur Radio Club (HARC) is a United States-based nonprofit organization dedicated to amateur radio activities and public service. Established in the early 1970s by employees of Hughes Aircraft Company who shared a passion for ham radio, the club has maintained a longstanding presence within the amateur radio community and continues to operate actively despite the original company's dissolution[1][5].

History

The club was founded in the early 1970s by Hughes Aircraft Company employees who were amateur radio enthusiasts. Over the years, HARC members have engaged in monthly meetings and various amateur radio events, including annual participation in ARRL Field Day. Notably, some members traveled to remote locations such as Clipperton Island to conduct special radio operations. Even after Hughes Aircraft Company no longer existed as an independent entity, the club remained intact and open to all interested members, regardless of their employment background or amateur radio licensing status[1].

Membership and Activities

Membership in HARC is open without restrictions related to employment or licensing. Individuals do not need to hold an amateur radio license to join, although obtaining one is encouraged. The club offers various membership categories, including full, retired, associate, and family memberships, with nominal dues. Meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday at the El Segundo Library in California, fostering community engagement and information sharing among amateur radio operators and enthusiasts[1][5].

HARC emphasizes public service through amateur radio, participating regularly in community events and emergency communication exercises. The club supports a range of amateur radio specialties, including contesting, digital modes, VHF/UHF operations, repeaters, and youth education programs. It provides resources such as entry-level license classes, mentoring, a club newsletter, and repeater services[2][5].

Organization

The club is affiliated with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for amateur radio in the United States, since January 14, 1976. It operates under the call sign W6HA. As of the last report, HARC had 61 members, with 59 voting licensed amateur members and 43 voting ARRL members. Leadership includes a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and editor, with William Johnson (AB6UI) serving as president[5].

Significance

HARC represents a vibrant amateur radio community with historical ties to a major aerospace company. Its activities promote amateur radio as a public service and social hobby, maintaining traditions of radio operation and technical education. The club's enduring presence reflects the ongoing appeal and community value of amateur radio in Southern California and beyond.
