American Volkssport Association

Overview

The American Volkssport Association (AVA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting noncompetitive sports and fitness activities across the United States. With its roots in the international Volkssport movement, the AVA encourages people of all ages and abilities to participate in various sports like walking, biking, swimming, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

History

Volkssporting originated in Germany in the 1960s as a reaction to competitive racing, evolving into a noncompetitive form of sport for the masses. The term Volkssport translates to "sport of the people" from German. In the United States, volkssporting was first introduced in 1976, coinciding with the American Bicentennial celebrations. The AVA was officially formed during a national convention in Dayton, Ohio, in 1979.

Activities and Mission

The AVA operates through a network of over 200 chartered clubs nationwide, hosting more than 2,500 events annually. Its mission is to promote lifelong fun, fitness, and friendship by organizing noncompetitive fitness activities. These events include walking, cycling, swimming, and other activities designed to be inclusive for participants of all ages and physical conditions.

Organization and Governance

The AVA is governed by a volunteer National Executive Council consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and ten Regional Directors. The organization also employs a small staff to manage its operations. It is recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Participation and Events

Participation in AVA events is open to the general public, with no requirement for membership. However, participants can choose to join the International Achievement Awards Program, which involves maintaining a record book and earning awards based on the distances covered and events completed.

Impact

The AVA plays a significant role in promoting physical fitness and community engagement across the United States. Its events are designed to be safe, enjoyable, and stress-free, often taking place at historic and scenic locations. The organization also encourages family participation, fostering a culture of health and friendship among its participants.
